MIETTE

Name: Miette
Player: Louise Dennis
Game: Mgin (Mages)

What does the Character do for a Living?

Absoluement Rien.

Who or What does the Character care about?

Music, her Cello and playing her Cello.

She is fond of her brother, Stephen, but rarely sees him. There is a lot unsaid between them.

What will make the Character show emotion in the game?

Miette presents quiet and contented front.

She is clearly saddened by memories of her past.

Once the calm exterior is pushed it becomes clear that she is easily frightened, suffering from nightmares (which she counteracts by playing the Cello at midnight) and inclined to succumb to nightmarish situations if imposed upon her during the day.

She tends to give way to authority/parental figures and attempts at intimidation.

What events made the Character the way they are today?

Miette and Stephen both grew up under the hand of an abusive step-father following the death of their own father. It was never made clear in the game how far the abuse had gone, but they had certainly been beaten.

Their father was a musician and Cellist, in fact is his Cello that Miette plays. Once out of the area of Miette's influence the Cello is revealed to be a sorry collection of smashed wood, barely holding itself together.

As a result Miette has retreated into a small world in which she can live alone and unbothered by anything that goes on around her.

What makes the character happy/unhappy/angry?

She likes sunlight, coffee, choclate ice cream and music and is probably happiest when combining them.

Contact with her brother and the associated memories saddens her.

She never got angry in the game, it would have involved connecting and getting involved with something.

How do People view the Character initially, after Long Acquaintance?

Initially Miette appears quiet and contented. She lives an idyllic lifestyle in which she wants for nothing and isn't bothered by anything. However for precisely this reason it is hard to get to know her well since she shows a disinclination to become involved with other people's lives or to "connect" with other people.

On long acquaintance it becomes clear that there is a frightened Child hiding not far beneath the surface of Miette and that her whole life is an attempt to hide from her childhood.

What Qualities does the Character admire (in other people)?

She tries not to become so involved with people that admiration comes into it. Gentleness, would come high on her list though.

What does the Character look like and Where do they live ?

Miette (unsurprisingly) looks just like Juliette Binoche in Three Colours:Blue (I can't think why).

In the game world the area where each character lived shaped itself to the character's personality. Miette lived at the top of an apartment block in a large bare empty flat. From the window the flat appears to be much higher, a safe refuge and tower. The main streets of her area, during the day are sunny and pleasant. There is a cafe just beneath her flat where Miette spends most of her time drinking coffee, smoking, and eating chocolate ice cream while listening to buskers.

The Back streets of the area are more like prohibition Chicago, or scenes from Michael Jackson's Moonwalker film: Dark, narrow, cobbled with dubious people lurking in the shadows. At night the whole area becomes like this. The streets are all steeply raked, winding with twists and steps galore.

During the night, Miette bolts herself into her apartment, and if she can't sleep because of the noises plays the Cello to calm herself.

Inspiration

Three Colours Blue, Sapphire and Steel, Moonwalker.

Note on Stats etc.

Miette was a powerful mage. Her area was empathic the sensing and picking up of emotions and memories from the people and objects that she came into contact with.

In Game History

The game didn't last very long, and fizzled (basically). However it lasted long enough for her brother and two other mages to intrude upon her domain. Attempts to track down the trouble-makers outside or to get Miette to confront her inner demons resulted in the beginnings of a breakdown in which her "safe" flat was gradually invaded by scarinesses from without. What she needed was the conviction that something could have been done for her when she was a child, she never gained that conviction.

Playing Miette

Playing Miette was something of a challenge, because of her reluctance to become involved in any situation. Her reaction to anything was to supply herself with a cigarette, coffee or alcohol and then sit quietly on the sidelines and observe. Sometimes this could be taken too far. Without the back up of someone playing her brother there wouldn't have been the incentive for the other character's to make her get involved or to inquire into her life.
